Mountain Biking Around Paris

At first glance Paris isn't an MTB city – but the Île-de-France hides some of the best trail regions in northern France. The Forêt de Fontainebleau alone (about 60 km south) features around 45 marked MTB routes with technical sandstone passages, the Forêt Domaniale de Saint-Germain offers 51 km of designated bike paths, and Rambouillet attracts riders with vast oak forests. To ride trails seriously, combine city and nature: by RER in 30–60 minutes to the region, then rent locally or bring your own bike.

The Best MTB Regions Around Paris

Four regions stand out in the Île-de-France – each with its own character and difficulty level.

Forêt de Fontainebleau

The top region of Île-de-France and internationally known – not only for boulderers, but also for mountain bikers.

Highlights:

  • About 45 marked MTB routes
  • Sandstone passages, roots, technical singletracks
  • Longest tour: Mont Merle via Rocher des Princes (~17 km)
  • Highlight: Gorges d'Apremont and Mont Aigu

Access: SNCF/Transilien from Gare de Lyon to Fontainebleau-Avon (~45 min), then bus or short ride.

Forêt Domaniale de Saint-Germain-en-Laye

51 km of designated bike paths on the plateau west of Paris.

Highlights:

  • Flat to gently hilly, ideal for beginners and families
  • Direct on RER A (Saint-Germain-en-Laye)
  • Mix of forest roads and singletracks

Forêt de Rambouillet

One of the largest forest areas in Île-de-France with oaks, ponds and sandy paths.

Highlights:

  • Tours from 30 to 80 km possible
  • Mix of forest roads and technical trails
  • Local rentals (also E-MTBs)

Access: N10/Transilien N from Paris Montparnasse to Rambouillet (~35 min).

Bois de Vincennes & Boulogne

Directly in the city – ideal for short after-work loops or warm-ups.

  • Only forest roads and easy paths
  • No real trail experience, but very accessible
  • 15 km of bike paths per forest

Tour Recommendations in Fontainebleau

Fontainebleau is large – the following tours are documented (Komoot, Wikiloc, Trailforks) and offer a good cross-section.

Mont Merle via Rocher des Princes

Longest marked MTB route in Fontainebleau (~17 km).

  • Technical sandstone passages
  • Spectacular rock formations
  • Level: advanced

Apremont Loop

Classic mid-difficulty loop through the famous Gorges d'Apremont.

  • 20–25 km
  • Mix of forest roads and trails
  • Many photo stops

Mont Aigu Panorama

Scenic loop with sandstone highlights and panoramic viewpoints.

  • 15–20 km
  • Medium to hard
  • In summer, start early – shade is limited

Family Tour Croix du Grand Maître

Easier loop around the core of Fontainebleau-Avon.

  • 10–15 km
  • Mostly forest roads
  • Suitable for kids from ~10 years

Guided MTB Tours & Bike Schools

There are few specialised MTB guides in Paris itself – but Fontainebleau and Rambouillet have established providers.

Bike Schools in Fontainebleau

Local providers like Top Loisirs and A la Petite Reine organise half-day to weekend MTB camps – including rental and guide.

Locacycles Rambouillet

Local rental + guided Grands Tours through the Rambouillet forest, also with E-MTBs.

  • 5–6 hour tours
  • Various difficulty levels

Private Coaching & Skill Sessions

Some Paris bike shops can arrange personal coaches for technique training in Fontainebleau (drops, switchbacks, rocky sections).

Renting Mountain Bikes in & Around Paris

While Paris has few classic MTB rentals, Fontainebleau and Rambouillet have established on-site rental scenes.

On Site in Fontainebleau

Several small bike shops in Fontainebleau-Avon rent hardtails and full-suspension bikes (also E-MTBs).

  • Daily and weekly rentals
  • Often: combinable with a trail guide
  • Tip: reserve in advance – especially on weekends

On Site in Rambouillet

Locacycles is the best-known address – wide MTB selection, also for families (children's bikes, trailers).

Bringing Your Own Bike

By RER and Transilien, bikes travel free of charge (outside rush hours).

  • RER A → Saint-Germain-en-Laye
  • Transilien R → Fontainebleau-Avon
  • Transilien N → Rambouillet

Best Travel Time for Mountain Biking in Île-de-France

Trails in Fontainebleau and other regions are rideable nearly all year, but the optimal season is spring and autumn.

Spring (Apr–May)

Ideal conditions: dry trails, blooming forest, mild temperatures.

  • 12–20 °C
  • Caution: sandstone passages are slippery after rain

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Hot and dry – sandstone sections grippy, but plan heat breaks.

  • 20–28 °C
  • Start early, carry plenty of water

Autumn (Sep–Oct)

Spectacular colours in Fontainebleau, still dry.

  • 12–20 °C
  • Best mix of climate and visuals

Winter (Nov–Feb)

Rideable, but slippery on wet sandstone and roots.

  • 2–10 °C
  • Mudguards and glasses recommended
  • Some trails close after heavy rain

Safety, Trail Etiquette & Environmental Protection

Especially Fontainebleau is a sensitive protected area – responsible riding is mandatory.

Equipment

  • Always wear a helmet (recommended in forest, not mandatory for adults in France)
  • Gloves and knee protectors on technical trails
  • First-aid kit and multi-tool in your backpack

Trail Etiquette

  • Use designated MTB routes – hikers and boulderers have priority
  • No skidding on sandstone – damages the surface
  • Don't disturb wildlife, respect quiet zones

Fontainebleau Conservation

Fontainebleau is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve – some paths are closed to bikes year-round or seasonally. Check current maps at the ONF (Office National des Forêts).

Communication & Emergency

  • In France, the European emergency number is 112
  • Forest reception is often weak – load tour trackers (Komoot, OS Maps) offline

Multi-Day MTB Tours From Paris

Those who want to stay longer in the saddle can combine multiple regions or ride to neighbouring Burgundy or Normandy.

Île-de-France Classic (2–3 days)

Saint-Germain → Vexin → Rambouillet → Fontainebleau as a multi-day loop with overnight stays in gîtes or hotels.

Morvan & Burgundy

By TGV ~90 min from Paris – the Morvan Massif offers designated bike parks and alpine character.

Normandy & Suisse Normande

Rocky singletracks with views of the Orne – very popular with Paris MTB clubs for weekend trips.
