Scuba Diving in Dubai

Dubai offers a surprisingly diverse diving scene: just off the city, several well-known wrecks lie in the Persian Gulf, including the MV Dara at only 20 metres depth and the tanker Energy Determination. To the east, on the Gulf of Oman, Khorfakkan and Musandam offer more than 23 dive sites with healthy coral reefs, wall and current dives, plus additional wrecks. For something truly unique, you can even dive inside the Dubai Mall – in the 10-million-litre aquarium with sharks and rays.

The Best Dive Spots In and Around Dubai

Four regions, each with its own character – from an urban aquarium to open current dives on the Gulf of Oman.

Wrecks in the Persian Gulf (Dubai)

Wreck diving right off the city:

  • MV Dara – steamer, 20 m depth, eagle rays, barracuda, occasional whale sharks
  • Energy Determination – impressive tanker

Ideal for Open Water Divers with wreck experience. Boat trips from Marina/Dubai Harbour.

Khorfakkan & Snoopy Island

~2 h east of Dubai on the Gulf of Oman:

  • Snoopy Island, Martini Rock, Inchcape wrecks
  • Clear water, 15–25 m visibility
  • Beginner to advanced dives

Musandam Peninsula (Oman)

Peninsula in the north – liveaboard region:

  • 23 dive sites, coral reefs, gorges
  • Current dives, 2 wrecks
  • Day trips from Dibba (border) or liveaboard from Khasab

Dubai Mall Aquarium

Unique urban experience: certified dive in the 10-million-litre tank holding 33,000 marine animals across 140 species, including sharks and rays.

  • Try-Dive also available for non-divers (with briefing)
  • Great as family or rainy-day activity

Best Travel Time for Diving

Mild climate in winter, warm water year-round – but summer is extremely hot above the water.

October–November

Best season: water 25–28 °C, visibility up to 25 m, air 25–32 °C.

December–March

Water 22–24 °C (shorty or 3 mm wetsuit), clear water, almost no plankton.

  • Lower sandstorm risk

April–May

Transition season – water rises to 26–29 °C.

June–September

Peak summer: water 30 °C+, air 40 °C and beyond.

  • Heat outside the water is exhausting
  • Aquarium dive is climate-controlled
