Hiking and Trekking
Abruzzo National Park is a hiking paradise with marked trails through beech forests, along ridges, and through gorges. Particularly rewarding routes include the Camosciara (a nature reserve with waterfalls), the ascent of Monte Marsicano (2,245 m), and circular walks around Lago di Barrea. With luck, you may spot chamois, deer, or even the rare Marsican brown bear. Sturdy hiking boots, water, and a park authority map are essential.
Equipment & Rental: Park visitor centres provide maps and recommendations. Local guides offer guided trekking tours.
Snowshoeing and Cross-Country Skiing
In winter, the landscape around Barrea transforms into a snow-covered wonderland. Snowshoe hikes through the silent, snow-laden beech forests rank among the most impressive experiences in Abruzzo. The national park also offers groomed cross-country ski trails and winter hiking opportunities. The ski slopes of Pescasseroli are just a few kilometres away.
Equipment & Rental: Snowshoes and cross-country skis can be rented in Barrea or nearby Pescasseroli. The park centres offer guided winter tours.
Mountain Biking and Cycling
The mountain roads and forest trails around Barrea are excellent for mountain bike tours. Mid-altitude terrain between 900 and 1,500 m offers varied trails with panoramic views of the lake and surrounding peaks. Road cyclists enjoy the quiet mountain passes of the region.
Equipment & Rental: Local providers rent mountain bikes and e-bikes. Always bring a helmet and repair kit.
Wildlife Watching and Nature Experiences
Barrea is one of the best places in Europe for wildlife observation. At dawn and dusk, deer can regularly be spotted at Lago di Barrea. With patience and a good guide, sightings of wolves, chamois, and the Marsican brown bear are possible. The park visitor centres provide information on observation points and guided excursions.
